Communication: Is the Sign Arbitrary?

My second day of reading in the Introduction to Communication helped me understand in identifying if the symbol you see  is Arbitrary.

I had to describe and comment on a sign that I noticed in the media (online, on TV, in advertising, in a book or newspaper or magazine, etc.). And answer questions:
Was the sign a symbol, an icon, an index, or some combination? What was the sign's signifier? What was its signified?

Semiotics Communication, Is the Sign Arbitrary? So I was in the middle of completing my online research for work and had trouble loading a particular webpage then I noticed a pop-up window with a “red shield”. The sign was a symbol because it has no direct connection to the referent; it could be a McAffee Virus Scan Shield. The signifier (elements of the red shield – color, shield, & the letter x in the shield).  It signified a warning to internet users that it is not safe to open the website; it may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the server.

Not all internet users are knowledgeable or highly oriented about the world of internet and because of this lack of knowledge some signs found while browsing the net would imply different meanings to users. The “red shield” is arbitrary in such a way that other internet users such as kids would possibly look at it as a game button; it could be a logo used by an organization or to an event like The Salvation Army’s annual fund raising campaign.

More questions I answered:

How would subjectivity, negotiation, and/or culture (all described in chapter 3) affect how you and other people might differently interpret the sign you discussed? What possible miscommunications (or other communication or interpretation problems) might come about as a result? How might these communication problems be prevented or minimized?--or could they be?

NEGOTIATION
As internet users learn the outcome of not receiving the sign’s message correctly, or as the sign appears on a webpage repeatedly while surfing the net, some of internet users would take part in learning the primary meaning of the sign.

CULTURE
The more the “red shield” appears to internet users while browsing the net, some internet users would take part in learning the message of the sign is trying to deliver, as a result of negotiation, I and other internet users would develop a common meaning to the sign. Or the more time an individual spends using the internet, the more chances of encountering the “red shield” sign which will eventually make you understand the message it’s trying to send.

COMMUNICATION PROBLEM
A communication problem may occur, for instance, when some internet users do not understand the message of the sign (red shield) created by webmasters/programmers to send a warning to the internet users.

PREVENT COMMUNICATION PROBLEM
For the example I illustrated, the message of the sign needs to be re-sent for internet users to understand the message. Or the webmasters/programmers need to say it loud in the context of re-designing the sign (clear & big; add words) to add more meaning.

Communication: Sign's Signifier, What was it signified?

First day of reading of the Introduction to Communication. Asked me to answer the following question:

Describe and comment on a sign that you noticed in some "real world" aspect of your daily life (that is, not in the media) this week that you considered particularly interesting, troubling, or in any other way significant. Was the sign a symbol, an icon, an index, or some combination? What was the sign's signifier? What was its signified?

I went to a local shop in Helena and noticed a sign (a flyer) that caught my interest, “Money Tree”.

The sign was a symbol that represents, as far as I can remember, an artificial tree with money leaves growing in a golden pot for a wedding reception gift.
The sign’s signifier was the written word “Money Tree”.

Out of my curiosity I walked towards where the sign was posted and behind it was a real miniature tree in a pot.

Before long, I knew that it actually signified the name of a bonsai plant on which the shop/seller posted for shoppers to easily recognize its name or locate the Money Tree.

See I am learning. Now, I am starting to wonder all the signs I see on the road or wherever I go, what could those signs signify to other people.

What is Communication?

One of the skills that I need to work on with is my communication skill. So I decided to read a book about Introduction to Communication.

Before reading the book, you need to define what is communication or answer the following questions:

Question 1: What would you say communication consists of? What are the various components or parts of a communication situation: What is involved, Who is involved, What they do, What happens, What their goals?

My Answer:
Communication consists of what you say, how you say it, why you say it, and body gestures. It involves expressing yourself & listening to one or more people's thoughts and emotions. Communication involves everyone around you and how they react to you and how deeply they understand the point you are trying to make. There goals will directly reflect the understanding of the subject and there personal or ethical beliefs of the subject.

Question 2: How is communication shaped or affected by the culture a person is a member of? Put another way, how does a person’s communication or communication style reflect his/her culture?

My Answer:
People from different countries tend to communicate in slightly different ways, in such a way, that some people can be aggressive and intimidating to others; some people don't talk often or ask many questions based on misunderstandings and lack of understanding for cross cultural communication; some people communicate without games and manipulation and are considerate to others. Because of cultural differences people express themselves in different ways.

Question 3:  How would you define the discipline of Communication Studies? (Consider, for example, what it covers or studies.

My Answer:
It studies how people deliver verbal and non-verbal messages with people of all different situations, mindsets, and cultures and the impact of those messages on people's beliefs and understanding of the subject. It includes the study of communication in individuals, groups, organizations, media, and across culture.

Question 4:  Name as many communication sub-disciplines (areas of specialty) as you can.

My Answer: Communication of Family, Communication of Friends, International communication, group communication (classroom, office), media communication, political communication, religious communication

Question 5:  What are the goals or objectives of studying communication? That is, what do you believe scholars of communication hope to achieve or accomplish? What “tools” do you think a communication scholar needs to conduct research and communicate its findings?

My answer: To become a good communicator; to improve the skills of listening and the expression of thoughts and feelings; and to better understand the world we live in. Nowadays, with the advancement of technology, a communication scholar needs to conduct research on how to use the Internet, Media Relations, and Broadcasts & Videos effectively.

How about you? How would you define communication? What is Communication?
