What is Communication?

One of the skills that I need to work on with is my communication skill. So I decided to read a book about Introduction to Communication.

Before reading the book, you need to define what is communication or answer the following questions:

Question 1: What would you say communication consists of? What are the various components or parts of a communication situation: What is involved, Who is involved, What they do, What happens, What their goals?

My Answer:
Communication consists of what you say, how you say it, why you say it, and body gestures. It involves expressing yourself & listening to one or more people's thoughts and emotions. Communication involves everyone around you and how they react to you and how deeply they understand the point you are trying to make. There goals will directly reflect the understanding of the subject and there personal or ethical beliefs of the subject.

Question 2: How is communication shaped or affected by the culture a person is a member of? Put another way, how does a person’s communication or communication style reflect his/her culture?

My Answer:
People from different countries tend to communicate in slightly different ways, in such a way, that some people can be aggressive and intimidating to others; some people don't talk often or ask many questions based on misunderstandings and lack of understanding for cross cultural communication; some people communicate without games and manipulation and are considerate to others. Because of cultural differences people express themselves in different ways.

Question 3:  How would you define the discipline of Communication Studies? (Consider, for example, what it covers or studies.

My Answer:
It studies how people deliver verbal and non-verbal messages with people of all different situations, mindsets, and cultures and the impact of those messages on people's beliefs and understanding of the subject. It includes the study of communication in individuals, groups, organizations, media, and across culture.

Question 4:  Name as many communication sub-disciplines (areas of specialty) as you can.

My Answer: Communication of Family, Communication of Friends, International communication, group communication (classroom, office), media communication, political communication, religious communication

Question 5:  What are the goals or objectives of studying communication? That is, what do you believe scholars of communication hope to achieve or accomplish? What “tools” do you think a communication scholar needs to conduct research and communicate its findings?

My answer: To become a good communicator; to improve the skills of listening and the expression of thoughts and feelings; and to better understand the world we live in. Nowadays, with the advancement of technology, a communication scholar needs to conduct research on how to use the Internet, Media Relations, and Broadcasts & Videos effectively.

How about you? How would you define communication? What is Communication?
